What is montefiore windmill?

Montefiore Windmill is a historic windmill located in Yemin Moshe neighborhood of Jerusalem, Israel. It was built in 1857 by Sir Moses Montefiore, a British philanthropist and Jewish community leader. The windmill was used for grinding wheat into flour and was in operation for almost 10 years.

In the late 19th century, the windmill was damaged due to natural elements and wars. However, it was restored in the 20th century and was turned into a museum featuring the history of Jerusalem's industrial heritage. The Montefiore Windmill also serves as a popular tourist attraction and offers panoramic views of the old city of Jerusalem.

The windmill stands 39 feet tall and has four floors, with each floor serving a different purpose. The windmill's sails rotate on a vertical axis allowing the wind to turn the sails and operate the machinery inside. The Montefiore Windmill is considered a symbol of the Jewish community's perseverance and commitment to preserving their heritage.
